Punishing Lust, Caution - Media Ban on Film Star, Tang Wei

The China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television recently banned actor Tang Wei from appearing in the Chinese media, presumably for staring in the sexually explicit film, Lust, Caution by Ang Lee. The ban clearly singles Wei out, while no punitive steps were taken against her male co-star, Tony Leung, who appeared in the same sex scenes. Lust, Caution is a painful indictment of sexism - as Wei’s character is repeatedly taken advantage of by all the male characters. The irony of this ban has surely escaped the attention of the otherwise penetrating censorship in China.
